A cavity if formed when a tooth undergoes excessive demineralization i.e. it loses calcium and mineral from it’ structure. Tooth decay (dental caries) is the most common oral problem that affects children. In India, 80% of children and 60% of adults suffer from tooth decay.
WHAT IS THE MAIN CAUSE OF TOOTH DECAY?
Plaque present in the mouth contains bacteria (germs). When these bacteria combine with other components of food and drinking, especially sugar, acid is formed. This acid attacks the tooth enamel and causes tooth decay.
Bacteria (Plaque)+ Sugar = Acid
Acid + Healthy tooth = Decayed Tooth
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR A CAVITY?
A cavity can be treated with a filling. If the cavity is very deep and has infected the nerve of the tooth, then the tooth can be treated with a Root Canal Treatment and a cap. Only in server cases does the tooth need to be removed.
